CBM/PCD Surfacing

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) - Used to surface cast iron heads with no pre-combustion chambers. PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) - High grade finish on alloy cylinder heads.

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) is an abrasive material. The only thing harder is diamond. This process is ideally suited for any hardened steels as there is little heat build up, so breakdown of the abrasive is very minimal. We use this wheel mainly for cast iron heads with no pre-combustion chambers.

PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) is a synthetic diamond which provides better surface finishes and higher removal rates than other abrasives. Mainly used for high finishes on alloy head surfacing.

Some of the more important features and advantages of polycrystalline diamond include the following:

  • Higher cutting removal rates (self- sharpening abrasive)
  • High grade finish on alloy heads
  • Very uniform surface finish
  • More uniform particle size distribution
  • Harder/tougher particles
  • Blocky shaped particles
  • Hexagonal microcrystallites (equally hard in alldirections)
  • Extremely rough surface (morecutting points)
  • Surface area 300% greater th an monocrystalline diamond
  • No abrasion-resistant directionality (abrasion independent of particle orientation)
  • Improved Surface Finishes
